the dictionary said it's a kind of curved bamboo/wooden thing that the officials held in their hands at court during the old days in China. However, not sure what it means if applied to a place.

Hi Lo, just imagine the shape of the thing. 笏 means a long and narrow piece of land.

Wat'?

i 've seen one book talking about HK places' name: the Word "wat" means a shadow and concave small place. The words probably coming from 客家人. that they moved from northern part of 廣東during South Sung dynasty.

醉容is right. However, 客家人 seldom use the '笏' as the name of a place. As a 客家人, I think '笏' is only mistaken for '堀'. '堀' is a cave or more specific the nest/den of an animal. Another word is "麻" which should mean '' and 鳳凰麻笏 is meaningless in 客家. Yet 鳳凰堀 (sound the same as 鳳凰麻笏) means the nest/home of a female phoenix. The other example is 老虎笏 which I think should be 老虎堀, the den of the tigers. However, the actual words"" and "堀" might be too native and so they were changed.

The reason is if they write 笏'的英語拼音on a road sign, it will be "FUCX"............
That's why they use "Wat" instead.
No kidding, this is serious.

Heung Kong"
