i am working on a survey on GPS. there are much controversal opinion on the usage on this page. some said it is useful and fun. some said useless.

please rise some suggestion on that.

i am a GPS user also. i found it useful on accuracy and reliability. however, the supporting software seems less.

i do not oppose using compass and map. comparing both GPS and compass, what do you think?

By Kin on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 - 10:54 am:  Edit

Which brand are you using? Trimble? or other brand?

If you are using some survey-graded GPS, I think it should be less fun than the outdoor one.

- The outdoor one is is not as accuracy as the survey one but it's firmware enable navigation and route planning, which is rarely seen in the survey GPS.
- Most navigation software (eg OziExplorer) only support the low-end models for NMEA or Vendor's own protocol, which some survey GPS may not able to use these software. Therefore, the supporting software can only supported by the Vendor.

I am not mainly depend on my GPS but I also bring my map and compass.

If you hike around the major hiking trail in HK, GPS is just for fun because it is almost impossible to get loss in Hong Kong.
The fun of using GPS is to estimate the time for arriving destination/waypoint. Maintaining the track log for each hiking trip is funny.

However if you do cross-country trekking, stream trekking or sailing in Hongkong, it should be a essential device to find your place.

Garmin Rino series in Stock in GPS World Ltd now. Did anyone purchase a pair? How does it works?

By Kin on Thursday, October 24, 2002 - 10:57 am:  Edit

How much??

By Kin on Thursday, October 24, 2002 - 10:59 am:  Edit

P.S. Rino series is the GPS model with WALKY-TALKY

By GPS on Monday, October 28, 2002 - 3:33 pm:  Edit

Yes, I've just check from GPS World Ltd. saying that they have already sold out all the Rino both 110 and 120, my god!
The Price is as follows: I've ask the sales there,

Rino 110@1,380.00
RIno 120@2,280.00

Sounds quite reasonable, I bought an eTrex Legend for around that price last time from GPS World.

By Kin on Tuesday, October 29, 2002 - 10:47 am:  Edit

Kin,
I've just ask from GPS World saying that they can also install the map of Hong Kong into the unit, but I thought I've make the price wrong up there, Rino 110 should be 1,580.00, sorry guys~
I'll reserve one pair from GPS World today.

That's great!

Hope to hear from your Review soon.

Hi GPS,
Did you buy the Rhino? How its performance compare with etrex legend?
Very eager to know that. The prices are quite attractive with the Walky-Talky features.
=)

gps,

By Kin on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 - 9:38 pm:  Edit

>TOM

By TOM on Wednesday, June 09, 2004 - 1:16 pm:  Edit

My Magellan 在Internet買,要$2000HKD.

I think the data is available in Lands Dept of Government. However, I am not sure if they got the exact database you mentioned. You may need to write some program to do what you want.

I have seen your company website and it sounds good for me. I am interested in GIS application and has researched to relevant topic in an University. Please feel free to contact me if you want to have more GIS discussion.

Rino is using a 462 channel which is still not opened for public use in HK today. I am not sure if owwning a Rino is illegal but it seems that many shops are still selling 462 channel walkie-talkie.

The 409MHz version of Rino (which is license free in HK) is available in Mainland. Not sure if any shop import the stock yet.

but .. 462MHz..
